Hepericum perforatum is one of many species commonly known as St. John’s Wort and is the species most frequently associated with herbal medicine. It is native to Europe but has since become naturalized in other temperate climates worldwide, with particular prominence in North America. The plant is a creeping perennial that produces star-shaped, yellow flowers with long, abundant stamens. St John’s Wort is traditionally harvested near the beginning of the flowering cycle on St John’s Day, which falls annually on June 24th. The flowers continue to bloom throughout the summer and can be harvested freely throughout the season.
Considered a holy herb, St John’s Wort was employed for several folkloric uses during the Middle Ages. It was once believed that the herb helped to protect people from curses, demons, and lightning.
In contrast to its many uses, some countries have identified St John’s Wort as an invasive species and noxious weed. Although beneficial to humans, it can be hazardous to livestock, as it sprouts up in pastures and causes photosensitivity in grazing animals that feed on it. Ingestion of the plant may lead to health complications and even death.
Traditionally used as a tea, sometimes available in tea bags; also used to make a red St. John’s oil for use in liniments and lotions, but only from fresh material. It may also be administered as a capsule or extract for convenience.
St John’s Wort is traditionally used to support healthy moods and promote emotional well-being. Numerous clinical trials have investigated the efficacy of St. John’s Wort in this capacity, with most showing positive results comparable to those of conventional treatments. Note: St. John's wort extracts may increase sensitivity to sunlight and the risk of sunburn; however, this is extremely rare when the whole herb is used. Not to be used with an MAO or Protease inhibitor.
In Magick, St. John's Wort is ruled by the Sun and the element of Fire. It was used to attract love and protect soldiers in battle. It is excellent when used in protection bottles. Traditionally burned on midsummer, it is said to keep you protected from evil magick being cast against you. It was used during the Inquisition as a means to compel witches to confess their crimes. This is an excellent herb to dispel all types of evil energy and spirits from a home.
