Brahmi is a small succulent herb with numerous branches, rooting at the nodes, found at elevations from sea level to altitudes of 4400 feet. It grows naturally in wet soil, shallow water and marshes. It has small flowers that are light purple or white in color with not more than four or five petals. The whole plant including the flowers can be used for medicinal purposes. It has a bitter and sweet taste and is known to impart a cooling energy.Brahmi is a therapeutic herb commonly used as a memory enhancer, aphrodisiac and a health tonic. It enhances the three aspects of memory which include long term memory, short term memory and the retaining capacity. Brahmi has a cooling property which keeps the mind calm and free of anxiety. It also promotes sound sleep. It is commonly used for Alzheimer's disease, improving memory, anxiety, and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among many other uses. But there is limited scientific research to support these uses.

NOTE: Brahmi might slow down the heartbeat. This could be a problem in people who already have a slow heart rate. It might cause "congestion" in the intestines and urinary tract. This might cause problems in people who have a blockages. It also can increase secretions in the stomach and intestines. There is concern that this could worsen ulcers. Can also increase fluid secretions in the lung. There is concern that this could worsen lung conditions such as asthma or emphysema. It should be used cautiously or avoided if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid hormone medications. As will all natural medications, consult a physician before using.

Magically, this herb can used for all types of mental powers and wisdom. An excellent herb for tonics fighting mental fatigue and for spells to bring clarity and clear thinking.

NOTE: Brahmi and Gotu Kola are NOT the same plant, although some do refer to Gotu Kola as Brahmi.
