Opals in general are a high water content stone, which can range anywhere from 3% to 21% by weight. Because of it's odd character it is technically a Mineraloid and not a Mineral. Opals are formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through the earth it picks up other minerals in it and carries it through cracks in stones or into decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind the Opal! The large color variety of Opals is generally determined by what types of minerals are in it.
