About Clear Quartz
Most quartz forms in either igneous rocks or environments with geothermal waters. In igneous rocks, quartz forms as magma cools. Like water turning into ice, silicon dioxide will crystallize as it cools. Slow cooling generally allows the crystals to grow larger.
Quartz can also grow from silica-rich water. Silicon dioxide dissolves in water, like sugar in tea, but only at high temperatures and pressure. Then, as the temperature or pressure drops, the solution becomes saturated, and quartz crystals form.
About Crackle Quartz
The crystal is heated to a high temperature to create crackle quartz and immediately dunked in cold water. The sudden cooling causes the crystal to crack inside. If dye is added to the quenching water, it will enter any surface-reaching fractures and flow, by capillary action, deep into the Quartz. The deep penetration of dye produces rich color in the Quartz.
Because crackle quartz is highly fractured, it is more fragile than other types of Quartz. It is one of the least durable tumbled stones. Durability problems are why you seldom see crackle quartz as cabochons.
About Aura Quartz (Angel or Opal Aura Quartz)
Aura quartz is made through a process called vacuum deposition. In this process, the quartz crystal is placed in a vacuum chamber and heated to a high temperature. A vaporized metal is then introduced into the chamber and deposited onto the surface of the crystal. The metal bonds to the crystal and creates an iridescent metallic sheen. The color of the aura quartz depends on the metal type used. Angel or Opal Aura quartz in this listing is made with a coating of Gold and Platinum.
