There are so many genus of Sandalwood trees; however, the one that is most often sold as “Red Sandalwood today,” Pterocarpus soyauxii, is not a sandalwood at all. This is a redwood from Africa referred to as African Coralwood or African Padauk. This wood is commonly used in magickal practices as Red Sandalwood and has been for a long time (you will find this listed in many reference books). True Red Sandalwood, Pterocarpus santalinus, is an endangered species of Sandalwood, and we highly recommend not working with it at this time.
In manufacturing, red sandalwood is used as a flavoring in alcoholic beverages. Don’t confuse red sandalwood (Pterocarpus soyauxii) with white sandalwood (Santalum album). Red sandalwood might increase the loss of body water through the urine (diuretic effect). It might also have drying effects that may help reduce diarrhea and break up mucus to make it easier to cough up.
True Sandalwoods come from the genus Santalum, and many are endangered. Sandalwood EO generally comes from a Santalum wood, hence the high price. Most real Sandalwood is generally brownish/yellowish, and the most common variety sold is Santalum Album (Indian Sandalwood). Indian Sandalwood, or any other type of True Sandalwood, is considered a holy herb and is generally burned in temples or funerals. In East Asian traditions, The Tree of Life is a Sandalwood Tree. This herb can be used as an offering to the dead, to strengthen the connection with the Ancestors, strengthen the spiritual body and bring wisdom. It can also be used in spirit conjuring – especially when blended with either frankincense or Lavender.
You can use red sandalwood to invoke love and lift the spirit – but it does not contain the raised vibrations you see in the Santalum Woods. Red Sandalwood is ruled by Venus/Water, and Santalum Sandalwood is ruled by Moon/Water.
