Closely related to cranberry and blueberry, uva ursi is a low-lying evergreen perennial bush whose berries are a favorite of bears, hence the name “bearberry.” However, it is the leaves that are used medicinally. Traditionally used as a tea or tincture. Frequently combined with buchu, cleavers, dandelion leaf, parsley fruit, or juniper berries. May also be taken in capsule form.

Generally used in teas, tinctures, and poultices. Many of the healing benefits of turmeric have been attributed to curcumin, a group of antioxidant compounds found in the rhizome. Although curcumin is available as a standardized extract, the whole herb may be more beneficial for you than the curcumin extract: Only very small amounts of curcumin are absorbed into the bloodstream. Turmeric as a whole herb stays in the digestive tract longer than curcumin, releasing antioxidant curcumin along with other beneficial substances.

Uva Ursi Leaf comes from the evergreen ground-covering shrub known by its Latin botanical name of Arctostaphylos uva ursi. The common names for Uva Ursi Leaf include Bearberry because bears like to eat red berries, Kinnikinnick, and wild cranberry. The Uva Ursi Leaf on the plant is dark green and feels thick to the touch, and the plant produces white or deep pink-colored tiny bell-shaped flowers that produce fruit in the shape of red berries. It thrives in the cooler Northern parts of Britain, North America, Europe, and Asia.

NOTE: This dried herb should not be used if you are pregnant, nor should it be taken for kidney disorders, irritated digestive conditions or if acidic urine is present.

In Magick, Uva Ursi is generally used for all types of psychic spells and rituals.
