Also Known as: Quercus alba or Quercus robur, Tanner's bark and oak bark.

Origin: USA

The Quercus alba is a hardwood tree native to the Eastern United States whose wood resists rot; certain of this wood is commonly used for making wine barrels. The bark of the tree is grey to white colored and has a tendency to peel off the tree. It also goes by the common name of Tanner's bark because it contains Tannin. The oak’s botanical name quercus comes from the Celtic words quer (fine) and cuez (tree). The parts used are generally the dried or toasted bark. Gentle dry heat increases the concentration of volatile oils in the bark. Bark, ground before storage. Gentle heating concentrates healing volatile oils in oak bark pieces, but destroys volatile oils in oak bark once it has been powdered. Typically used in baths, washes, infusions, teas, tinctures.

Note: Avoid bathing a large area of inflamed skin all at once. Oak bark infusions, extracts, and tinctures taken internally should be timed so that any medication (especially any medication that has to be taken on a relatively alkaline or empty stomach) is not in the digestive tract. Take oak bark 4 hours before or 4 hours after any prescription medication.

In Magick, White Oak is ruled by Sun and Fire. It is a strong Male herb being sacred to many deities including Dagda, Jupiter, Thor, Zeus, Janus, Heme, Hecate, Pan and Erato. It is a strong protection herb and works well in all blends for that purpose. Acorns from an oak tree can also be used for the same purpose. It is a prized and sacred herb in magick and has been for many centuries.
