Connecting with and honoring our Ancestors is a beautiful way to enhance our spiritual practice. Those who have come before us have a lot to teach us, and establishing a relationship with them can help you find answers and support in your everyday life and, at the same time, discover new gifts that may be dormant in your lineage!
This set is designed to get you started or enhance your practice. Raven has curated these items to give you a solid foundation as you begin! Check out the video below, where Raven shares her tips on how to get started with your ancestral practice!
Your kit contains the following items:
- Etched Selenite Heart—Selenite is a powerful energy mover, and I try to keep one on every altar I have. It helps to open communication channels between us and the spiritual plane. In ancestral practice, it can help open the communication channel between us and them and aid in them receiving our prayers and offerings. Selenite is also a high-vibration stone, so it helps elevate the vibrational frequencies of your altar.
- Ammonite Shell—Ammonites are fossils from an extinct Cephalopod. Working with fossils helps us connect to our planet’s memory and wisdom. Our ancestors walked the earth before us, and fossils can be a powerful tool to help us connect to them. Ammonite shells contain the sacred geometry symmetry of the Fibonacci sequence (also called the golden spiral or golden ratio). The golden spiral is the true essence of natural beauty, and its symmetry is perfection in nature. Their continuous coils reflect divine creation in harmony. Ammonites transmute negative, low vibrational energy into positive, high vibrational energy. They are an excellent companion for Ancestral work!
- Smoky Elestial Quartz – Elestial Quartz, also known as Window Quartz, is a type of Quartz with a specific pattern of terminations that flow throughout the face and body of the crystal. It is a profoundly spiritual and high-vibration crystal linking our conscious body and spiritual mind to the universe. The knowledge encased in this stone is tied to the ancient origins of our planet and can be a powerful tool for Ancestral work. Meditating with this piece will link your third eye to a vast library of knowledge and history. Elestial Quartz can provide insight into our past lives and ancestors and the events that shaped all of us.
- Spiritus Smoking Blend: This blend is created for ancestral work, working with the dead or underworld spirits. You don’t have to use it only in ceremonies. It is safe to smoke every day if you so wish! If you decide to use it in a ceremony, it works beautifully to calm the mind, open the heart, and prepare for Meditation.
- Mortuus Incense: This blend can set the stage for any ceremony involving the Ancestors or the Dead. After you create your sacred space, you can light your incense. You must watch it; all incense burned on charcoal must be “fed.” This means you add a little incense at a time and add more as needed. This allows you to control the energy released through the incense as your ceremony progresses. This incense is also excellent as an offering in and of itself! You can use it as your monthly offering to the ancestors!
- Mortuus Oil: This oil is the perfect ceremonial tool for all rituals involving ancestors, ancestral lineage repair, and the Mighty Dead. You can use it to anoint your tools or yourself. Keep the oil on your altar to become imbued with your ancestral energy.
- Spirit Reiki Charged Votive Candle: This is a fantastic choice for an ancestral candle as it has already been recharged with reiki. Be sure to charge your candle with intent before you use it!
- Charcoal Roll: A roll of 10 charcoal disks to burn your incense!
To set up your ancestor altar and use the items in this kit, you will need to provide the following (not included in your kit):
- Altar Cloth
- Votive Candle Holder
- Loose Incense Burner
- Tongs for Charcoal
- Pipe or rolling papers for smoking blend

Required Items for your Atlar
- Ancestral Candle (included in your kit – you will need a candle holder): This candle gets lit every time you sit at your ancestral altar. It symbolizes their presence on the altar. I often use my ancestral candle as a focus point when speaking to my ancestors. Once you are done speaking with your ancestors or with your ancestral ceremony, snuff out the candle.
- Selenite heart (included in your kit): Be sure to cleanse it before you use it. Charge the heart to open the communication channel between you and your ancestors and keep your altar vibrations high.
- Elestial (included in your kit): Elestials are keepers of Wisdom. Be sure to cleanse your electrolytes and charge them before you use them. You want it to hold the ancestors’ wisdom and protect you and your altar.
- Ammonite (included in your kit): After cleansing the shell, charge it for a solid connection to Mother Earth and all creatures she keeps (including our ancestors!). Ask the shell to tap into the power of the sacred to bless you, your ancestors, and all of the work you will do on your altar.
- Charcoal incense censer (Charcoal and incense are included in your kit, but you will need to provide a censer): You do not need to light your incense each time you speak to your ancestors. You can light it during special ceremonies or as an offering to your ancestors.
- Charcoal Tongs (not included in your kit): These small metal tongs hold your charcoal while you light it. Any metal tongs can work – they do not have to be unique for charcoal (I got mine at the grocery store!).
- White Altar Cloth (not included in your kit): You will need to provide an altar cloth for your altar. I recommend sticking with white, as you want it to be as neutral as possible. White cloth napkins or placemats work great as altar cloth!
Optional Items for your Altar
- Skull: A skull is a beautiful addition to your ancestral altar. It can represent the dead or the human experience. Your skull can be made of crystal, resin, a candle, etc.
- Cultural Items: Items that represent the culture of your ancestors are lovely items to include on your altar!
- Offering Bowl: I like to have an offering bowl on the altar to put my offerings and petitions in it. This is an excellent item if you plan to offer food or drink to your ancestors often. Instead of a bowl, you can also have an offering glass or cup. If you want, you can have both!
- Oracle Deck: As I described in the video, an Oracle deck can be beneficial in validation work when receiving messages from your ancestors. I generally like to work with decks in groups of three, but that’s me. You can start with one and see how you feel. Below are the decks I currently have on my altar:
- Ancestor Spirit Oracle Deck by Jade Sky and Belinda Morris
- Earth and Bone Oracle by Sirian Shadow
- Love Oracle Cards of Eden by Abusua Pa
Items that Should not be on your Altar
- Photos of Living Family: Generally, you should never include pictures of living family on your ancestral altar!
- Photos of Dead Relatives: As I explained in the video, we don’t know the stage of healing our most recent ancestors are in. Therefore, I generally choose not to include pictures of them to be safe.
- Spoiled food and drink: I generally remove all offerings after 24 hours – to ensure that nothing ever spoils. Spoiled foods can attract lower vibrations, darker entities, and unhealed ancestors.
- Anything not yet cleansed and consecrated: Be sure every item on your ancestral altar is thoroughly cleansed and sanctified. You do not want to bring other external energies to your altar.
First time connecting with your Ancestors? Start Here!
If you are connecting with your Ancestors for the first time, you should do an introductory ceremony to call on your HEALED ANCESTORS, as I discussed in the video. Check out the ceremony below for how to get started! You should only need to do this once. If you continue to build your relationship working with your HEALED ancestors only, you should not need to do it again.
Honoring Your Ancestors
Once you begin your ancestral work, you must continue to connect with them. Try to sit at your ancestor’s altar once a month to make some type of offering to your ancestors. Offerings can vary, so choose what feels suitable for you. Over time, your ancestors may tell you which offerings they prefer. Offerings can be:
- Incense: Most incense can be used as an offering. Be sure to set your intention before you light it.
- Drinks: Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. A cup of coffee or a mug of tea can also be a fantastic ancestral offering!
- Food: Food is a traditional ancestral offering ranging from one item to a complete meal. Many ancestors appreciate it when you offer them their favorite foods. Sweets are also greatly appreciated! Let the food sit on your ancestral altar for 24 hours before being placed in nature.
- Flowers: Flowers or even essential oil diffusions are great offerings as well. If you are using fresh flowers, be sure to take them off the altar before they begin to wilt.
- Candles: A candle offering is an offering of light to your ancestor. I always enjoy anointing my candles with ancestral oil and adding herbs. From a tea light to a votive, the critical part is that you let the candle burn down!
- Prayers and Songs: A prayer or song can also be a meaningful offering!
- Crystals, cultural items, and more: Placing an actual item on the altar as an offering is a beautiful, permanent addition. However, remember that once you have given it, it must remain on your altar (after all, it belongs to them now). If you have a small space for your ancestral altar, this may become an issue over time. I enjoy having a Jar on my ancestral altar where most permanent items are placed.
The critical thing to remember is to maintain a relationship. Go to your altar often and share details of your life with your ancestors. I like to visualize them as sitting across the table from me. The more time you spend at your altar, the stronger your connection will be.
